Take a look at the world around you.
Listen to your surroundings. Pay attention. Do you hear it? Racism
is there, I promise. Pay attention everywhere you go. During lunch,
in the morning, look around. Take note of what people are together.
Do you see it? Listen to the news, music, current media. It’s
there. It’s there, and it shouldn’t exist. We should be able to
get along despite our race, culture, size, beliefs. We should be
able to coexist. We should live in a world without discrimination.
In order to make a change, we need two
things to happen: we need to educate others on racism and positive
ways to take action towards a change for the better.
Talk to your family, friends,
classmates, anybody. Educate. We need to get the word out. Stop
telling racist jokes and point out the vulgarity that is racism when
you hear others say racist jokes. Stand up for people you see being
discriminated against, even if you don’t know them. It doesn’t
matter if this discrimination is based on looks, ethnicity,
sexuality. Let people know-it’s time to make a difference in our
communities and our daily lives. Start in your community. I’ll
begin with mine, Bemidji, Minnesota. We could do this, but not on
our own. If we work with our own communities and grow, spreading
our roots like a tree. This is possible.
