The DAC SLP trip
Have you ever wanted to have some great fun and help your community at the same time? At DAC (Day Activity Center), that’s exactly what we do! We venture over to the DAC and we volunteer our time helping out disabled adults with their motor skills. Volunteering at the DAC, we have great fun with our friends, and brightening up someones day. We plan activities like crafts, frosting cookies, and of course DANCE PARTIES!
Grand Marais
As I enter Moose-Lips exhausted from a long day of wood-chopping, snow-shelter-building, and skiing, I hear the bustle of rosy-faced people trickling in and sharing stories from their day spent in beautiful Bally Creek, located just outside of Grand Marais. While making memories, learning new wilderness skills, and living in wood-heated cabins, you will experience the true beauty of solitude and realize how much secluded places like this really have to offer. While here, I guarantee you will make memories and friendships that will never be forgotten.

Poetry Out Loud!
Poetry Out Loud is an amazing way to express yourself through various poems. TrekNorth FOL/ COMP students were required to memorize one poem and recite it out loud to the class, resulting in six students progressing to the school-wide competition. Two students were then chosen to accelerate to Regionals, where people from the surrounding area would also compete. Kaija Roy and Rowan Johnson competed at the region competition this past Saturday (Feb. 19) in Fosston, MN. They competed against four other students for a spot at the state competition and took the top two spots! They will be competing March 19 at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Wish them luck!
BV Day
The day was Friday, February 3rd , after a series of sharp corners on the bus, the large, steep slopes of Buena Vista came into view. Evan, Gabe, and I swallowed down the excitement, barely able to contain it. We had been waiting for weeks to all be able to venture to Buena Vista and have a session together. Once inside the massive wooden chalet, teachers shouted instructions to all of the rowdy Trek students, trying to control their apprehension.
We picked up our tickets from the counter, sifting through the crowds to get outside. We went up the Julia ski lift to get a warm-up run in before we started to migrate toward the terrain park. The sun glistened off the fresh groomed corduroy slopes. I fastened my bandanna tighter around my face to keep it from freezing. I cruised down the slopes casually, the motions of snowboarding feeling natural, watching my friends carve in a rhythmic pattern, side to side, in front of me. We reached the bottom, and went to spend the rest of the day in the terrain park. It was a good day. - elijah lash

ROBOTICS
The TrekNorth robotics team's challenge for 2012 season is to program a robot to launch a foam basketball while balancing on a bridge with another bot. On March 10th, the TrekNorth robotics team will compete at the Duluth Regionals, the largest meet in the FRC (First Robotics Competition). Students are working long hours to make the robot, raise money to buy materials for their robot, and find ways to create alliances (yep, robots unite!) at the FRC Regional competition.

2012 Trek North Speech Team
The TrekNorth speech team, under the “command” of Charles Merhar, is comprised of 18 students and has placed in four out of five meets that they've attended. The team recently placed third overall at a meet in Bagley – where EVERY attending Trek student received an award – and also had three students place at a Junior High Meet in Cass Lake.
The members of the team participate in different categories such as Extemporaneous Reading, Duo Interpretation (two students performing together), Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Informative, Discussion, Creative Expression, Great Speeches and more. Being a part of the team requires hard work and commitment, something the students have definitely put forth.
Coming up this Saturday the team will be arriving early in the morning at Trek to compete in a meet in Park Rapids. If you see Emily Quanrud, CJ Merhar, Heidi Eckdahl, or Sam Boston wish them good luck! If you are looking to get involved with the speech team talk to a member or tag along for a meet and see what this team and competition is all about!
Good luck team!

The Trek North Valentine’s Day Dance, brought to us by Trek North Student Council was a festive occasion with tons of decorations and a live DJ! A great amount of people showed up, some great dancers some not so good, and everybody had a great time. The music was lively and up beat and great to dance to, overall the energetic vibe was continuous through the night.

Hobson Trip Recap 2012
Somehow, the ninth graders at Trek North managed to be the only grade representing their school on the trip to Hobson Forest. The annual winter trip was, just like previous years, all about cross-country skiing. After plenty of learning and practice, many memorable wipeouts, and lots of laughs, the group returned with new winter camping experiences and memories of all the fun times. Hopefully, next year, more grades will come to ski, sled, build an igloo (attempt to anyway), learn about trapping, see wolf tracks, compete in our version of the annual skiing Olympics, and more.

TN Ski Season Recap 2012
The ski season has come and gone. The girls’ varsity team won the TrekNorth hosted race on January 31, with Hannah Marty in 3rd place, Maddy Hawkins in 5th, and others close behind! The varsity girls weren’t the only ones who learned a lot, however. New skiers bravely wobbled their first skiing steps, and some their last on the TrekNorth team, all with the help of our ski coaches Dan, Cyri, Katie, and of course, Chuck. Lack of snow meant that Will Hawkins and Sarah Hamrin had to learn to skate ski during their first race in December. All that persistence during the snowless days paid off when the snow finally came. See you next year on the TrekNorth cross country ski team! - LF
Special Olympics Swim Meet Feb. 2012
The Special Olympics Aquatic Events were held February 17,2012, at Bemidji High School in Bemidji, Minnesota. Before the events started the participating teams were announced and a participant led everyone in saying the Special Olympics theme. The events taking place on this day included the ten and twenty-five meter swim. For the ten meter, the participants swam down the width of the pool once. For the twenty-fifth meter the participants swam down the length of the pool twice. Volunteers and the participants all had a good time! There was a lot of laughter, and good feelings everywhere. -TK
