How To Survive A Speech Meet

The best advice for a speech meet is simply to have fun. You will see
many great speeches, and chances are you'll have a great time.

Meets are held at high schools around the state. Some buildings can be
very confusing. Your coach will give you a code for your rounds
(remember it at all costs!), and the roster for the rounds will tell
you where to go. Some schools will provide each speaker with a map. If
a particular school doesn't, don't hesitate to ask for directions.
Rooms for different categories tend to be in the same area of the
building, so your next round shouldn't be too far.

For those of you who have never been to a speech meet, the judges can
be kind of intimidating. Some speakers can also be intimidating due to
their experience. Only half the speakers are as good as they seem. If
you put a lot of emotion and effort in, you'll do fine. You'll also
notice many of the good speakers are very expressive. Don't be afraid
to overact. Animate your voice, actions, face, and posture. This can
help your score a lot.

Be confident. Speech is all about confidence. If you don't have it,
you won't do well. And, if you don't have it, fake it! You will do so
much better by faking confidence than if you let it show you're
nervous. Your judges will be able to tell if you let it show that
you're nervous- and they will comment. This could affect your score.

Good luck!
